New Apple iPhone 6s, 6s Plus Break Sales Records in First Weekend

Apple expected record sales Relevant Products/Services of the new iPhone 6s [pictured] and 6s Plus over the weekend -- and that’s exactly what the tech giant got. Apple today reported the sale of more than 13 million new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus devices.
With those numbers coming in just three days after the launch of the new devices, it marks a new company record. Considering that those numbers were just for sales in the United States, the immediate future looks bright for the company.
“Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Customers’ feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can’t wait to bring iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9.”

Why They're Such a Hit

Why are the new iPhone models such a big hit? Probably for much the same reason Apple keeps breaking record after record with new rollouts -- features.
3D Touch is perhaps the biggest new addition. 3D Touch senses how deeply you press the display, which is supposed to make it easier to navigate the device. Beyond that, the new iPhones feature Live Photos, which bring still images to life, a 12-megapixel iSight camera, 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash and the Apple-designed A9 chip. The phone is made with the strongest possible glass and 7000 series aluminum.
The new wireless paradigm makes upgrading more affordable. You can get a gold, silver, space gray or rose gold metallic iPhone 6s or 6s Plus for zero down and 24 payments of $27 and $31 (respectively) from Apple’s retail stores, wireless carriers and authorized Apple resellers like Best Buy.
You can purchase either device unlocked and have the chance to get a new phone every year as well as AppleCare+ on the new iPhone Upgrade Program. Monthly payments on that deal start at $32 for the iPhone 6s and $37 for the iPhone 6s Plus.

Why Upgrade Now?

We caught up with Michael Disabato, managing vice president of network and telecom at Gartner Relevant Products/Services Inc., to get his insights into why the new devices are already such a big hit. He told us that it's partly because everything Apple puts out is a big hit. But there’s more to the story.

“You have to look at the demographics of the upgrade cycle. Everybody that bought a 4s couldn’t buy a 5 because they were on a two-year contract. Everybody that got a 5s couldn’t buy a 6 because they had to wait two years,” Disabato said. “It’s an artificial cycle caused by the network operators and their stupid contracts.”
With Apple’s new leasing program -- and programs like AT&T’s Next -- Disabato predicts a more natural upgrade cycle. Disabato said he went from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 6 because he was holding out for the bigger screen and Touch ID.
“Various people upgrade for various reasons,” he said. “Apple is making a huge deal about these phones. It’s got a lot more RAM in it, it’s faster, it’s got the 3D Touch. So there may have been people holding out for that.”
Beginning October 9, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in 40 more countries, including Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Taiwan. The new iPhones will be available in over 130 countries by the end of the year, according to Apple.
